Trip Reports

2003

• September Three members went from hayling Island on Starfish and filled their boots with ling up to 25lb Pollock to 15lb and Conger up to 40lb. This was a round trip of over 80 miles out in the English Channel in choppy conditions.
• August some members managed to get out from Exmouth on Blue thunder and caught Bass, Pollock and a good Cod up to 14lb.
• June and July were pretty ordinary regarding boat trips this year but we did get some good days on the Bass and Pollock at Exmouth.
• May 18th Exmouth.At last we were able to beat the weather and get amongst the fish. A full crew fished with Dave Newman over the inshore wrecks and boated over 50 Pollock.
• Sadly March and April were not kind to us and we did not get any decent trips in. One or two members got out on individual trips but the weather beat us.
• February 9th Once again the weather gods are not looking after us. The first pollock trip of the year is cancelled.

2002

• December 21st.Six members went to Minehead for a last gasp attempt at the Cod. 4 Cod over 5lb 1 over 7lb and 1 over 12lb were topped by two spendid Blond Rays Both breaking the existing record by a long way.

• The rest of the year was not too eventfull regards boat fishing we were unlucky with the weather. Some members did very well though in the Bristol Channel Boat championships. Phil Allan, Jason Brennan and Rich Calvert all Broke club records. With Tope and Trigger fish.

• July. Seven members fished the British Conger Championships and although just missing out on the prizes they managed to boat 46 Conger totaling over 1 ton of Conger between them and released all but one.

  Phillip Morris also qualified as a full member with a reef Eel wieghing 31lb.08oz.

• June has been a very good month for the club with members fishing from Dave Newmans boat Susie Jon and Dave Buls new boat Becci both from Exmouth. The best day was June 2 when 4 members and a couple of guests caught 49 Bass plus some good Pollack 17 miles out on Becci this boat is very fast 45 minutes to get in from 17miles out.

• April, At last we have a couple of trips to report as so far 2002 has been a disaster. Stu took some work colleges and customers to Exmouth for the day aboard Dave Newmans Susie Jon and they managed to catch 30 plus Pollack and a nice Bass for one.

• March 22nd Hayling island some members fished aboard Starfish. They were rewarded with a 400lb catch of Pollack between 4-7lb.

• Torquay March 2nd Delora (Kevin) Cancelled 60mph winds all week. This looks like the end of our Pollacking for this year.

• Exmouth February 16th Blue Thunder We are jinxed the trip is cancelled.The boat is out of the water.

• Exmouth February 3rd Blue Thunder (Mike). We are not starting the year off too well another trip cancelled.The boat is out of the water. It will be back in ready for the 16th.

• Watchet January 13th Scooby Doo Too (Steve).Email At last we are out and very nice to sail from Watchet now with the new pontoon boarding. Steve managed to find the Cod for us.A couple of 5lb fish 0ne of 6lb 8oz with the best reaching 8lb.9oz. Also a very good Whiting weighing 2lb.2oz

• Torquay January 5th Delora (Kevin). The first trip of the year and cancelled what a start.

2001
• Sadly most of the rest of 2001 was not very productive with trips either blown off or not very productive. Only one reported Cod of 6lb.5oz from the club boat trips.
  • Jason and Stu managed to keep the year going with some very good Rays caught while they were fishing for the club at the B.C.F.S.A. Charter boats competition.
  
  
• Exmouth August 26th Pioneer (Arnie) and Susie Jon (Dave).
  The club fished the annual perrins cup competition this year it was fished at Exmouth 16 anglers using two boats.
  As this competition is decided by the heaviest total weight and must be fished at anchor.This was different for Dave and Arnie because they always fish on the drift. First stop was for some Mackerel for bait then on to the serious stuff. The wrecks did not produce much so a move inshore to a reef was made. Using a catch and release estimate weight system for all small conger. With five minutes to go it was still very close.
  • Tony was on 77lb.(4 eels)
  • Steve.A was on 92lb.(5 eels)
  • Ces was on 94lb. ( 5 eels)
  Tony and Ces catching conger of over 30lb. Two fine eels estimated at over 40lb were brought to the boat by anglers but unfortunatley they were disqualified as they had more than one anglers hook in them.

  Steve with a super reef conger estimated at between 50-60lb.(Weighed 5hrs later 53lb.08oz). Two minutes left and Steve gets bitten off and says is it worth going down again someone calls remember the five min rule so he rebaits and down it goes. Instantly he gets a bite and its all over now as he reels in a fish esitmated at 12lb which takes his total to 104lb.(6 eels) Winning the championship also the pool for heaviest bag and pool for biggest fish well done Steve.

  • A total of 31 eels were caught.
  • 3 estimated over 30lb.
  • 2 estimated over 40lb.
  • 1 eel over 50lb.
  • 25 were released with 6 taken for eating.
  • The top skipper with 20 eels was Dave Newman presented with a bottle of vodka.

  Two very big pouting were also caught (when using mackerel flapper they had to be big). The club record broken twice. First by Tristen with a fish of 3lb.04oz then dad Nigel stealing his glory with a fish of 3lb.07oz.

• Exmouth July 22nd Pioneer (Arnie)
  7 members using live eels boated 23 Bass amongst a catch of Pollack Pouting and lots of Mackeral.

• Plymouth June 30th-1st July B C C championships.
  23 eels caught between the two teams, one team just beaten for second place by one eel.

• Exmouth May 19th Pioneer (Arnie)
  Conditions good with the first live eels of the year. 77 Pollack up to 8lb with a lot being returned. Mark 19 Pollack.Phil 16 Pollack.Tony 15 Pollack. Mark and Tony also had a nice Bass each. A number of Pout and plenty of Mackerel were also caught. A good trip returning to port with more than the total catch of another three boats out that day.

• Dartmouth March 18th and 31st Jennifer Ann (Barry).
  This was meant to be the time for the Plaice but the water was very dirty and they did not read the book. A few were caught but two poor trips.

• Exmouth Feb 16th Blue Thunder (Mike)
  Conditions not the best for Pollacking but Mike was a good skipper. we ended the day with 15 over 10lb the best 14lb.08oz caught by Reg.

  2000

  Four Members on each boat this was the last trip of 2000
  Fish that were caught encluded.
• 45 Cod. Two over 10lb biggest 15lb 8oz
• 30 Conger eels biggest 36lb 8oz
• Lots of Pout, L.s.d and a few Rays up to 10lb Conditions not too good but fishing made up for the weather.
